Issues While Bringing a Physical Disk Resource Online

!±8± Issues While Bringing a Physical Disk Resource Online

In Windows 2000, physical disk resource is the cluster-capable disk that is managed by physical disk resource type (the shared disk connected to one or more nodes in a cluster) as a cluster resource. These physical disk resources cannot be created for logical drives or partitions but instead as entire physical drives. But at times, you run into an issue while attempting to bring a physical disk resource to an online state. It is possible that your hard disk file system is corrupt and you need to reformat the hard drive. In such situations, you need to use a recent and valid data backup to restore the lost information. But if data backup is invalid, insufficient or non-existent, data recovery applications should be used to extract the lost data.

Consider an instance, you attempt to bring physical disk resource to online state and observe one of these issues:

You receive an Event ID 1066 in the System Log of Event Viewer with the following description:

"Cluster resource Disk Y: is corrupt. Run chkdsk /f to repair problems."

Resource fails to come to online state and takes longer time than expected
Chkdsk/f runs on shared hard disk

These issues are specific to Windows 2000 Advanced Server and Datacenter Server editions.

Cause

Possible causes of above issues are:

File system corruption
Permission issues

Windows cluster service performs a series of steps to determine the possible corruption in disk resource and if this operation fails, it runs Chkdsk/f to repair the possible file system issues.

Solution

To correct this problem, you need to carry out these methods:

You should run ChkNTFS to determine the state of dirty bit.
If the bit is not reported as dirty, you need to troubleshoot permission issues.
If the bit is reported as dirty, you need to run Chkdsk/f command on shared cluster disk. However, if Chkdsk fails to correct disk corruption, you should reformat the hard drive and restore lost data from backup. But if the data backup is not up-to-date or in an invalid state, Recovery Software tools can serve the purpose of salvaging lost data. These are advanced Recovery applications that use powerful scanning algorithms to extract lost data.

Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery is the finest recovery software. The software is equipped with advanced features like RAW file recovery, Drive imaging, Disk cloning, Drive status, E-Mail recovery and more. It supports FAT16, FAT32, VFAT, NTFS and NTFS5 file systems. The software is compatible with Windows 7(Currently in RC1), Vista, XP, 2003 and 2000.

Running Chkdsk on Windows Hard Drive

This video will show you how to run the chkdsk command, on windows xp. Vista and Windows 7 are very similar, but not exactly. Look for videos about them, soon. Chkdsk is a built in utility, in the Windows OS, which allows you to scan your hard drive for physical and data errors. Most of the time, chkdsk can repair data errors and detect a failing hard drive, displaying physical damage. Use the Chkdsk utility to keep your hard drive healthy and make sure it isn't dying on you.

Flush Cache Command Failure and Hard Drive Corruption

!±8± Flush Cache Command Failure and Hard Drive Corruption

In computing, cache is the temporary storage area that is responsible for holding frequently accessed data to offer rapid data access. In more technical terms, cache represents the collection of data that duplicates original stored data, when the original data is comparatively expensive to compute or fetch. Sometimes, you might need to flush this cache. Windows permits doing so by using flush cache command. This command can be used through command prompt. But if you issue this command on a large hard disk in some particular conditions, the hard disk might get corrupted and your data might get inaccessible. In such situations, it becomes crucial that you have valid data backup or else you'll fail to restore data, whereas, in case of any backup concerns, you can use hard drive recovery software.

Your drive might get corrupted in following set of conditions:

1. You are using a large disk
2. The hard disk has a 48-bit LBA (Logical Block Address) enabled
3. You issue flush cache command that fails to be issued
4. You enter the shutdown state or Hibernate state

This hard disk issue is specific to Windows XP (Home and Professional Edition) based systems.

LBA or Logical Block Addressing is the general technique used for specifying the location of data blocks that are stored on computer storage devices, including hard disks. LBA address is ATA can be 48-bit wide, as a result of which a hard disk can be of 128 GiB or 128 PiB.

However, to solve the specific HDD corruption issue, you need to follow any of these methods:

1. To prevent such events occur in future, you should install latest service pack available for Windows XP
2. Try running chkdsk to detect and repair HDD corruption issues
3. If chkdsk cannot repair the hard disk, you should reformat the hard disk and restore lost data from backup

After reformatting the HDD, if backup fails to restore complete information, you should opt for hard drive recovery applications that serve as valid tools of data recovery. Such Hard Drive Recovery Software come built with interactive interface and advanced recovery features.

Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery is a comprehensive hard drive recovery tool to recover lost data from Windows 7 (currently in RC1), Vista, XP, 2003 and 2000. These are read-only application, specifically designed to offer safe, efficient and complete recovery results. It supports FAT32, VFAT, NTFS and NTFS5 file systems.
